So you've got your first wand, or you're thinking about it. Good news: wands are one of the easiest toys to get to know. No complicated set-up, no learning curve, just a few buttons and a lot of ways to make them feel lovely. Here's what we wish someone had told us at the start.
What is a wand massager?
A wand is a handheld massager with a soft, rounded head and a longer handle. The head does the vibrating, the handle gives you reach and grip. That shape makes wands really versatile: they're just as good for easing tight shoulders after a long day as they are for something a little more personal.
All of our wands are cordless and USB rechargeable, so there's no hunting for a plug socket or a cable getting in the way.
Start low, then build up
The most common beginner mistake is going straight to full power. Wands are strong, and more isn't always better. Try this instead:
- Begin on the lowest speed. Give yourself a minute or two to get used to the feeling before turning it up.
- Try it through fabric first. A layer of underwear, a sheet or a soft towel takes the edge off the intensity and is a gentle way to start.
- Move it around. Small circles, slow sweeps, or just resting it in one place all feel different. Explore before you settle.
- Turn it up only when you want more. You'll quickly learn where your sweet spot is, and it might be lower than you expect.
Speeds vs patterns
Most of our wands give you both, and they do different jobs:
- Speeds change how strong the vibration is. Think of it as volume.
- Patterns change the rhythm, like pulses, waves or build-ups. Think of it as the song.
A good way to explore is to pick a low speed and click through the patterns one by one. When one feels right, then play with the strength.
Getting to know the buttons
We keep controls simple on purpose, so you're not squinting at your wand mid-moment.
- PLAY:THREE has three simple buttons, 20 vibration patterns and 8 speeds.
- The Enchanter also has three simple buttons, plus an easy-read digital display so you can see your setting.
- The Magician has an LED display that remembers your favourite setting, so next time you can pick up right where you left off.
- PLAY:FOUR has a glowing control panel that's easy to find in the dark.
A little lube goes a long way
A small amount of water-based lube can make things smoother and more comfortable, especially through bare skin. Stick to water-based: it's safe with silicone and easy to clean up afterwards.
Bringing a partner in
Wands aren't just for solo time. Their long handle makes them easy to hold during partner play, and they're a relaxed way to try something new together. Let whoever's on the receiving end take control of the buttons at first, and talk about what feels good.
Which wand is best for a first-timer?
Honestly, any of them. But if you want a pointer:
- Want the classic? PLAY:THREE was our very first wand and is still a customer favourite, in Black, Gray or Plum.
- Want something you can take in the bath? The Magician is fully waterproof with a whisper-quiet motor.
- Want something pretty for the nightstand? PLAY:FOUR comes in Black or Pink with a soft, rounded head.
- Want a little luxury? The Enchanter is sleek black with a polished rose-gold collar.
Still deciding? Our Journal has a full side-by-side guide to choosing your wand.
